Washington Prep Increases Algebra Proficiency and Strengthens State Test Pass Rates

The Challenge

Washington Preparatory High School is an urban, four-year comprehensive high school within the Los Angeles Unified School District. Of its 1,900 students, approximately 36.6% are English Learners, and 89% qualify for free and reduced price meals. California Standards Tests (CST) scores measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests. When compared to both district and state averages, Washington Prep underperformed in both high school math and English language arts.

The Solution

To increase the number of students passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and increase math achievement, Washington Prep purchased Revolution K12’s Algebra Readiness, Algebra I and state test prep software to be utilized in their Math and English courses during the school day.

The Results

  • The percent of students scoring proficient and advanced in Algebra I grew from 1% to 11%.
  • The percent of students scoring basic and above on the Algebra I increased from 7% to 28%.
  • The percent of students scoring below basic or far below basic in Algebra I decreased from 93% to 72%.
  • An additional 3% of students passed the CAHSEE Math (from 50% to 53%).
  • An additional 4% of students passed the CAHSEE ELA (from 52% to 56%).
  • Additionally, the percent of 10th grade students testing proficient and above in ELA rose from 21% to 24%.
